Thank you all for the comments. I have decided to go with the mottled cream for the background. I have now completed the first step. I am really liking how these colors are looking together. On the right hand side of the photo is a stack of little 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" three patches from ends of strips that weren't big enough for a rail fence. I haven't decided if I am going to pick them apart to use in the nine patch blocks or just use them for another project.

Your rail fence blocks remind me of neopolitan ice cream. Yummy!
I remember my children playing with Hungry, Hungry Hippo. They loved that game. Your son looks like he's having a blast with it.
What about piecing some dark-light-dark combos and using them as the center of a nine-patch? That way you wouldn't have to pick apart the ones that you've already pieced.
I've also seen a pattern recently... in the booklet I gave you (Hooked on Charms by Paula Stoddard), where you could cut a 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" dark strip and put in the middle. It creates a plus sign.
I'll bet you'll have a lot of "scraps" from this quilt. Maybe you should just collect them then play at the end and see what comes of it.
I have a new friend here in Wyoming, who saw my Moda Flirtations yesterday. Today she went and bought them as well as one of the "hooked" books and she's preparing to start a new quilt.
With some many Chocolate Covered Strawberry Quilts going on around me, I'll have to get busy on one too! I think mine will be a Valentine's Time quilt (since I don't have much in those colors around the house, but I enjoy the fabrics).
Wow! That was LLLLLLOOOOONNNNNNGGGG winded!
Suzy :D
I love the colours! Big project.
